Collaboration Readiness Tool
To help organisations understand and quantify levels of employee readiness for Enterprise 2.0 collaboration technologies, we've developed a research methodology called the Collaboration Readiness Tool (CRT). The CRT is built around three dimensions:
- The ability the individual has for using a collaboration technology, determined by their current use outside work
- The appetite the individual has for using that collaboration technology at work
- The perceived availability of the collaboration technology in their organisation today
By answering a dynamic series of questions we assign an individual to one of 8 possible profiles, each reflecting different combinations of readiness across all three dimensions. Profiles are then aggregated to build an overall readiness map for the organisation (for a one or more technologies):

Each profile reflects a different set of needs, whether it's education, building a compelling business case, or simply deploying new tools and processes to an eager audience. By segmenting its employee population and understanding the diverse needs therein, an organisation can build a more effective strategy for driving successful adoption of Enterprise 2.0 collaboration technologies and processes.
| Description | Example | |
| Citizen | Completely comfortable in the collaborative environment and deriving considerable benefit from it | The project manager who blogs regularly and manages conversation through discussion threads |
| Proponent | Willing and able to get started but lacking the necessary tools | The marketing manager who is struggling to set up a global community for his product |
| Adventurer | Excited by the possibilities but lack of experience may lead to unintended consequences | The CEO who wants to blog without a plan in place |
| Hesitator | Digitally experienced and equipped with the tools but not convinced of their application at work | The IT manager who thinks online discussion is a waste of time |
| Investigator | Keen and willing but needs to be properly supported if this enthusiasm is to be harnessed | The Financial Controller who believes ‘we should do something about social media’ |
| Prospect | Digitally active outside work but largely unaware of the opportunities internally | The call centre operative who runs much of his life through Facebook |
| Questioner | A newcomer in an unfamiliar and potentially uncomfortable world | The middle manager now required to complete and maintain a LinkedIn profile |
| Outsider | Living in a world as yet untouched by collaborative technologies | The salesman who spends much of his time with customers |
Our recent ICEmarq™ research suggests the following profile for adoption of key features of social and professional networks within organisations in the UK:
